COMMUNITY HEALTH LAB
The College is having a separate Community Health Nursing lab, 900 sq. ft area with all the equipments for education and practice of the students about the community situation and to learn the basic Nursing procedures which are to be performed in community settings. We are having all the types of AV Aids to stimulate the students for the Community Health Nursing Practice.
This lab ensures the students to learn home visiting using bag technique & practice the community health nursing while providing family health care at their door step using modified home visiting kits and learn to treat the patient in home environment with minimum facilities. The lab is equipped with variety of audio visual material to stimulate the students and to practice health teaching in the community. One corner of lab is designed as home-set up.
Our community lab makes the student’s clinical experience an educational and enlightening one and to promote empowerment of the students. Demonstrations on different procedures are given prior to perform in community to meet their objectives. It also helps in problem-solving and decision making skills. Demonstrations make the learning more realistic and authentic.
Objectives
- To educate the students to establish working relationship with families.
- To teach regarding delivery of effective nursing care to assigned families using community health nursing process.
- To demonstrate practical skills in performing home nursing procedures.
- To stimulate the students for providing planned and incidental health teachings to families and individuals.
In our institute, community health nursing lab is situated in third floor. It is well equipped and properly furnished with healthy environment of learning. The lab consists of all the equipment for providing basic care in terms of primary health care like community bags with all equipments. The lab is arranged in such a manner that students can practice the procedures and make their effective use in practice for providing comprehensive health care to families. There are so many articles arranged for creating good teaching learning experience to students. Lab consists of test tube, thermometer, hemoglobinometer, models ( non consumable items ), community bags-60, hand washing towel, bedsheet, puppets ( linen items ), BP Apparatus, weighing machine, spirit lamp, sterile articles for dressing, assessment articles for various age groups, fetoscope, solutions for doing screening procedures like benedict’s solution, acetic acid, spirit, HCL, normal saline, betadine solution etc. we are having proper lab utilization and maintenance policies present. Every users have to practice maintenance guidelines.
Lab Utilization Policy
- Policies and procedures are proposed to guarantee that the Community Health Lab is maintained as an efficient learning area for students’ training and assessment of Community Health problems.
- Maintenance and Policy & Procedures must be followed by all its users.
- The Lab promotes safe and effective practice by demonstrating and reinforcing the highest level of performance and readiness.
- Strategies are skill demonstration, practice and return demonstration, case scenarios, consistent use of medical terminology; application of the nursing process in skill performance, care plans, documentation, audio and video-assisted teaching; and individualized instruction.
Lab Utilization Procedures
Faculties
- Orient the students in the lab.
- Updating lab policies and procedures as needed.
- Monitoring procedures performed by the students.
- Supports students who require additional assistance with learning Community Health skills.
- Ensure the maintenance of equipment by maintaining the lab inventory register.
- Determining the inventory needs of the lab.
- Preparing and ordering supplies as needed.
- Recommending general cleaning in the lab.
- Maintain lab inventory register periodically, & lab utilization registers.
- Maintain lab with safety regulations
Students
- Return the equipment used for lab practice.
- When practicing with scenarios, approach situations as if they are actual patient interactions.
- Maintain cleanliness of the area where they are practicing.
- Display professional conduct.
- Share the opportunity to practice.
- Report damage or malfunction of the lab equipment.
- Inform the concerned faculty of any particular learning needs.
- No students are to be in the lab without the Lab faculty.
- Doors must be locked when the lab is not in use.
Conduct/behaviour in Lab
- All Students should participate in a lab orientation conducted by Community Health Lab.
- Students should review procedures and scenarios prior to the lab session.
- Follow lab hours strictly as mentioned in the timetable.
- Students need to fill out their logbook as part of the completion of the curriculum requirement.
- No cell phones are allowed in the lab.
- No food or drink is allowed in the lab.
- No equipment or supplies can be taken out of the lab without permission.
- Any equipment or furniture used should be returned clean, in proper form and in proper place ready for the next use.
- Replace the equipment and chairs when leaving the area always sign in and out of the lab for both practice and presentation.
